A police standoff at the Patrick Apartments in Stephenville on Sunday involved the near-drowning of a three-year-old child.

According to arrest warrants obtained by Beneath the Surface News, Jacob Travis Daniels and Crystal Lee Brinegar, the child’s mother, have both been charged with endangering a child.

Daniels is also charged with interfering with emergency assistance.

The following is a synopsis of what police say transpired on Sunday, Feb. 16.

Law enforcement and first responders were called to 2251 W. Lingleville Road for a child drowning.

When Det. Matt Butcher with the Stephenville Police Department arrived at the scene, he spoke to a witness who said she walked into the bathroom and saw Daniels “sitting next to the bathtub and the three-year-old child in the bathtub on her side.”

The witness said she believed that he was washing the child and that Daniels yelled at her to get out of the bathroom.

A short time later that witness told the detective that she heard Brinegar yell that her daughter had drowned

A second witness reported that they provided medical assistance to the child.

“Crystal Brinegar left the child without adequate and reliable supervision in a bathtub filled with water for such a period of time that the child became submerged and unresponsive,” the warrant states.

“Further, Crystal Brinegar left (her daughter) in care, custody and control of Jacob Travis Daniels, someone she has knowledge of being physically abusive to her daughter.”

Stephenville Police Chief Dan Harris said the child was revived by first responders with the Stephenville Fire Department and is continuing to show signs of improvement.

The complaint against Daniels states that he “intentionally, knowingly or recklessly or with criminal negligence, engaged in conduct, by omission, that placed a child younger than 15 years of age in imminent danger of death, bodily injury or mental or physical impairment, by failing to assist the child submerged in water in a bathtub next to which defendant was sitting.”

In 2011, Daniels was charged with carrying a prohibited weapon, switchblade, knuckles.

He is being held at the Erath County Jail on a combined $19,500 bond.

Brinegar is being held on a $14,500 bond.
