Backpack Buddies of Erath County: Feed a child for an entire year by purchasing a peg doll for $100.
Not all kids celebrate the weekend.
For those who rely on school meals for their primary nutrition, weekends can mean hunger and that’s where Backpack Buddies of Erath County steps in to help through its peg doll program.
This is how it works: Volunteers prepare bags of non-perishable food (things like apple sauce and ravioli) and disperse them on Fridays to children enrolled in the program so they have food for the weekend.
You can sponsor a child by purchasing a peg doll for $100.
“This program was started by the Leadership Stephenville Class of 2017 who came up with the idea to use peg dolls as a way to represent the kids we are feeding,” board member Sheila Williams told Beneath the Surface News.
“There were 180 kids that first year and now we feed over 390 kids every week.”
Children are confidentially enrolled into the program by a teacher, counselor or family member.
And if they have siblings living at the home, extra food for those children is placed in the bag as well.
School districts taking part in the program include Stephenville, Bluff Dale, Dublin, Huckabay, Lingleville, Morgan Mill and Three Way.
The deadline to purchase a peg doll and help with this wonderful program is Jan. 31.
