Beneath the Book Club: It’s time to talk about our January read, Blue Sisters.
I’m an only child, so a book about the relationship between three sisters was intriguing to me.
I didn’t miss having siblings while I was growing up because I was always surrounded by lots of cousins and friends.
But as an adult, I feel the only-childness more acutely.
I’m lucky to have four sisters-in-law who I love dearly, but somehow, I imagine, it’s probably not the same.
Blood ties are strong.
Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors will introduce you to three estranged sisters – Avery, Bonnie and Lucky – who are reeling from their sister Nicky’s death.
Each sister has carved out a unique life for themselves – Avery, a recovering heroin addict turned attorney living in London; Bonnie, a former boxer living in Los Angeles; and Lucky, a model in Paris trying to out-run her hard-partying lifestyle.
Nicky’s death has impacted her sisters in unexpected ways, changing the course of their personal relationships, careers and interactions with each other.
It is beautifully written, and at times, slow.
It’s a melancholy tale about how a family learns to survive grief.
If you have ever lost a close loved one, this book will hit hard.
There were times I had to push through the reading, but I’m so glad I did.
