Fast-spreading apartment fire claims life of 72-year-old Dublin man; investigation underway.

A fire at an apartment building in Dublin has claimed the life of 72-year-old Jackie Reed.

A press release from Dublin Police Chief Cameron Ray said a 911 call was placed shortly before 4 p.m. on Wednesday reporting a fire at an apartment complex in the 100 block of West Mesquite Street.

“The caller reported that the apartment was engulfed in flames and that there was a possibility of an individual still inside,” the report states.

The Dublin Volunteer Fire Department, Dublin Police Department, Dublin EMS, and Erath County Fire Rescue responded immediately to the scene and found the unit fully engulfed in flames.

While the fire was contained to a single unit, three additional apartments received substantial smoke and fire damage.

“This is a tragic situation, and our thoughts and condolences are with the Reed family during this difficult time,” Chief Ray said. “We will also do everything we can to help the displaced residents and get them back in their homes as soon as possible.

“The Dublin PD will also be working closely with the property owner to assess the structural integrity of the building.”

An investigation to determine how the fire started is underway, but so far, there are no signs of foul play.
