I toured Stephenville’s new senior center and it’s amazing. It will open to the public on Monday.

Stephenville’s senior population is in for a treat.
The new senior center is set to open its doors for the first time on Monday, Jan. 13.
The $1.7 million, 7,200 square-foot facility includes a catering kitchen, lounge and reception area, outdoor patio, pickleball courts and 2,600 square feet of event space that can be rented on the evenings and weekends.
It’s located at Stephenville City Park, adjacent to Splashville.
I met with Daron Trussell, director of the city’s parks and leisure services, and senior center coordinator Sandy Morgan, who gave me a tour of the new facility on Tuesday.
And you guys… wow!
This place is impressive.
A reception desk and cozy lounge with a couch, tables, chairs and television, greet guests as they walk through the front door.
The space is warm and inviting, decorated in neutral tones with small touches that make visitors feel like they’re sitting in the comfort of a good friend’s living room.
“I think people will be surprised at how nice this is,” Daron told Beneath the Surface News. “We were in that old building for more than 40 years and this is a great opportunity to enhance our programs and attract new members.”
Even though the facility doesn’t officially open until next week, a bustling yoga class was under way while I was there on Tuesday.
“We currently have about 300 members and one of our main goals is to attract new people, especially those who are 55 and older,” Daron said.
Oh, and membership to the senior center is free.
Sandy Morgan has been the center’s coordinator for 27 years and said the thing she is most excited about is the event space, which includes four 86-inch TVs, sound system, tables, a coffee bar and glass doors that lead to a patio with outdoor seating.
“We have more possibilities than ever before; the space is magnificent,” she said. “I can’t wait to see our country and western dancers when they see the size of this dance floor - their jaws are going to drop.”
City officials plan to slowly implement new programs for seniors to enjoy like additional exercise classes, a walking class (in City Park) and pickleball.
But some old favorites will resume next week.
