It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I just had my annual mammogram. (And it was a cinch.)

Today's mammogram was quick and painless thanks to x-ray tech Marsha Rogers who has done my annual screenings for the last few years.

I had a mammogram today.

October is, of course,  Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so I took advantage of Cross Timbers Imaging’s special on breast cancer screenings.

I spoke with Dr. Nanette Evans about the importance of annual mammograms for women beginning at the age of 40.

I’m well past that age, and although I’ve had at least 10 mammograms over the years, I still get a little nervous when it’s time.

I suppose it’s the unknown; the fear that something scary is going to be discovered. But I know that early detection is key, so every October I make an appointment.

The last few years Marsha Rogers has been my x-ray technician.

Marsha has been a radiologist since 1972 and knows her stuff.

She is also patient, kind and very gentle (and we all know how important that is).

“Breast cancer is common, usually affecting women without a family history, but when found early breast cancer has a better than 90% cure,” Dr. Evans told Beneath the Surface News.

“We are working hard at identifying women with increased density or other risks that would benefit from supplemental screening to offer them a more in-depth evaluation.

“We have brought the latest advanced imaging tools - from screening to diagnostics or image guided biopsies - to positively impact the health of our community without having to leave Stephenville.”

My appointment was at 10 a.m. today.

I arrived at Cross Timbers Imaging in Stephenville about 15 minutes prior to my appointment. I filled out a little paperwork, paid $150 and was immediately taken back for my screening.

At 10:08 I was back in my car and heading home.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women this year, making it the second leading cause of cancer death in women (only lung cancer kills more women annually).

Approximately 1 in 8 women will be affected by breast cancer during their lifetime, so don’t wait.

I’m so glad mine is over that The Husband and I are celebrating with wine and sushi tonight.
