Nurse practitioner enjoys special connection with patients struggling with mental health issues.
Yvonne Joseph is a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who treats the needs of patients at Hamilton General Hospital’s Solutions Behavioral Health department.
She joined the team at Hamilton Healthcare System in June 2021 after earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University.
Joseph grew up in West Africa, moving to the U.S. more than 15 years ago to attend college.
“I always knew I wanted to work in the healthcare industry,” she told Beneath the Surface News. “I started my nursing career in med-surg and rehab, but I wanted something more.”
When she discovered that she had a special connection with patients struggling with mental health issues, her career path changed.
Today, Joseph treats people of all ages dealing with anxiety, depression, bi-polar, schizophrenia, eating disorders and sexual abuse using psychotherapy and medication.
“We treat anything that keeps patients from functioning as an individual and we work with them to have an effective life,” she said.
The clinic is located next to Hamilton General Hospital. Services also include medication management and individual and group therapy.
She said patients struggling with mental health issues often benefit from treatment they receive in a small setting.
“Hamilton Healthcare gives individualized care to its patients – two cases are never the same,” she said.
When asked what makes the Hamilton Healthcare System special, Joseph didn’t hesitate to answer.
“We work together; we have a oneness,” she said. “We are like family and you see that teamwork.
“We love our patients.”
