Search for the next fire chief heats up: City appoints Chuck Elliott to serve as interim.

Stephenville Asst. Fire Chief Chuck Elliott

Chuck Elliott has been appointed to lead the Stephenville Fire Department at the end of July when longtime fire chief Jimmy Chew retires.

Elliott has been with the department for almost 40 years and has served as the assistant fire chief for years.

“Chuck is the obvious choice to replace me and has been my right-hand man for many years,” Chew told Beneath the Surface News.

I spoke with Elliott on Thursday morning and he said he is looking forward to serving as the city’s interim fire chief “for a short time.”

“But right now, I want the focus to be on Jimmy’s retirement,” he said.

City manager Allen Barnes said a search firm will be used to find the city’s next permanent fire chief.

Chew, who has been with the fire department for 50 years, announced his retirement during the Stephenville City Council meeting on Tuesday night.

His last day is July 30.
