Tarleton Police Officer Blessed Matai is April’s Hometown Hero.

Tarleton State University Police Officer Blessed Matai has been named April’s Hometown Hero, a program sponsored by Farmers Insurance agent Leslie Walker.

Blessed has been a police officer for 10 years, three of which have been spent at Tarleton.

He also owns Makhuwa Brazilian JiuJitsu and is known for his self-defense videos every other Friday on Beneath the Surface News.

Blessed, originally from Mozambique, earned his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian University. He and his wife Sarah have three kids.


Blessed says he was “humbled and honored” to learn of the award.

“Everything I do for the community is straight from the heart so being recognized is a huge honor,” he said.


When he’s not working, Blessed likes to watch his kids play sports, camp, listen to audio books and run.
